A New Distribution Problem of Balls into Urns, and How to Color a Graph by Different-sized Sets

چکیده

Balls into urns. We have n labelled urns and an unlimited supply of balls of k different colors. Into each urn we want to put balls, no two the same color, so that the number of colors in every urn is different. Balls of the same color are indistinguishable and we don’t care if several are in an urn. How many ways are there to do this? (The reader will note the classical terminology. Our question appears to be new but it could as easily have been posed a hundred years ago.) Call the answer χ n (k). We form the exponential generating function,

A new approach in graph- based integrated production and distribution scheduling for perishable products

This study is concerned with how the quality of perishable products can be improved by shortening the time interval between production and distribution. As special types of food such as dairy products decay fast, the integration of production and distribution scheduling (IPDS) is investigated. An integrated scheduling of both processes improves the performance and costs because the separated sc...

Collision Times in Multicolor Urn Models and Sequential Graph Coloring With Applications to Discrete Logarithms

Consider an urn model where at each step one of q colors is sampled according to some probability distribution and a ball of that color is placed in an urn. The distribution of assigning balls to urns may depend on the color of the ball. Collisions occur when a ball is placed in an urn which already contains a ball of different color. Equivalently, this can be viewed as sequentially coloring a ...

On The Distribution Of The Number Of Missing Words In Random Texts

Determining the distribution of the number of empty urns after a number of balls have been thrown randomly into the urns is a classical and well understood problem. We study a generalization: Given a finite alphabet of size σ and a word length q, what is the distribution of the number X of words (of length q) that do not occur in a random text of length n+q−1 over the given alphabet? For q = 1,...

Fully Analyzing an Algebraic Pólya Urn Model

This paper introduces and analyzes a particular class of Pólya urns: balls are of two colors, can only be added (the urns are said to be additive) and at every step the same constant number of balls is added, thus only the color compositions varies (the urns are said to be balanced). These properties make this class of urns ideally suited for analysis from an “analytic combinatorics” point-of-v...

Parallel Jobs Scheduling with a Specific Due Date: Asemi-definite Relaxation-based Algorithm

This paper considers a different version of the parallel machines scheduling problem in which the parallel jobs simultaneously requirea pre-specifiedjob-dependent number of machines when being processed. This relaxation departs from one of the classic scheduling assumptions. While the analytical conditions can be easily statedfor some simple models, a graph model approach is required when confli...
